Baby's First Christmas Gift Ideas That Still Mean Something in Ten Years

A baby's first Christmas is the one gift occasion where almost nobody wants something practical. The onesie will be outgrown by Easter; the toy will be forgotten by February. What families keep is the thing with the name on it: the stocking that comes out of the box every December, the ornament that goes on the tree first, the blanket in the photo in front of the lights.

Here is how to choose one that is still in the box ten Decembers from now.

Start with what gets taken out every year

The best first-Christmas keepsakes are the ones with a job to do each December. A stocking hangs. An ornament goes on the tree. A blanket or a bib shows up in the photo. Something that is used once a year is handled gently and kept on purpose, which is exactly what you want from a keepsake.

Clothing is the exception. A “My First Christmas” outfit is charming on the day and outgrown by spring. Buy it for the photo if you like, but don't expect it to be the heirloom.

Name, or name and year?

This is the question everyone asks, and there is no wrong answer. A name on its own stays current for every Christmas that follows; it is simply the child's stocking. A name with the year says this was the first one. Many families put the name on the stocking and the year on the ornament, so one piece carries the date and the other grows with the child.

Whichever you choose, check the spelling twice. Embroidered keepsakes are stitched to order and cannot be restocked or resold, so a misspelling cannot be fixed after the fact.

Why embroidery outlasts print

Printed lettering fades with washing and light. Stitched lettering holds its texture through decades of handling, which is why the embroidered pieces are the ones that survive in the attic box. Every Beegiv keepsake is embroidered to order, never printed, with the thread colour chosen at checkout.

Gifts from grandparents and godparents

If several people want to give a first-Christmas keepsake, coordinate so they don't all give the same thing. One stocking, one ornament, one blanket makes a set; three stockings is a problem. When ordering more than one piece, add each to the cart separately so every one carries its own name and wording.

When to order

Personalized pieces are made after you order. At Beegiv, most are ready to ship within 3 to 5 business days, and carrier delivery adds another 3 to 7 business days, so allow one to two weeks in total. To be safe for Christmas delivery, order by the first week of December; weekends and US holidays are not production days. If you are later than that, email infor@beegiv.com before ordering and we will tell you honestly what is possible.

Where to start

Everything Beegiv makes for the first Christmas is in the Baby's First Christmas Gifts collection, each piece personalized with a name and, if you want it, the year. If you are shopping for the whole first year, Baby's First Milestone Gifts gathers the first Christmas, the first birthday and the milestones that come between them.
